How to fix glass splashbacks

July 27, 2018

kitchen ideas- splashbacksGlass splashbacks are a fantastic way to enhance your homes visual appeal. Suitable for use anywhere in the home, they’re regularly found in kitchens, protecting the walls from cooking spills. But what happens when one is damaged in some way? Can it be repaired? Let’s take a closer look at some of the common types of damage and find out.

Cracks

A common problem with glass splashbacks is the occurrence of cracks. Well, when the incorrect glass is used anyway. When located behind the hob, toughened glass has to be used, otherwise cracks can occur from the high temperatures. In order to cover a crack, you could attempt to stick another splashback over the top of it. However, that will create an uneven finish, affecting the visual appeal negatively. Therefore, a replacement is recommended.

Dirt behind the splashback

Another regular issue with glass splashbacks is dirt seeping in behind them. This occurs when the edges weren’t sealed properly during installation. It’s possible to remove it off the wall yourself and clean it with a mild soap detergent and non-abrasive cloth. A guide for removing a glass splashback can be found here. However, this is very time consuming and may damage your splashback, especially if it’s been bonded to the wall and not screwed onto it.

Scratches

Scratches are particularly common on splashbacks which are located in areas exposed to human contact. However, there is a way of removing them:

  • Firstly, give the surface a clean with either glass or window cleaner and then wipe away residue so its dry.
  • Next, rub in a metal polish with a non-abrasive cloth in small, circular motions.
  • Finally, buff the area using a non-abrasive cloth.
  •
You may have to repeat this method a few times, but scratches should be removed eventually. However, if the scratch is particularly deep, you could try using a car windscreen scratch repair kit. Alternatively, Jack of Glass can repair any scratches as part of our glass repair service.

I had to replace a small double glazed panel in a window. I though it would be difficult to get anybody interested as it was such a small job. However, Jack of Glass did the work. They visited the house to take the measurements, ordered the replacement glass and fitted it all very efficiently and at a reasonable cost. I will use them again.
