Composite doors are revered for their robust construction, enhanced security features, and appealing aesthetics. They amalgamate various materials, each chosen for its specific beneficial properties, resulting in a door that’s highly resistant to weathering and exceedingly durable. Their aesthetic appeal is a bonus, making them a popular choice among homeowners aiming for both security and elegance. Delving into composite door maintenance is pivotal in preserving these attributes, ensuring your door remains an inviting entrance to your abode.

Routine Cleaning Techniques

Regular cleaning is pivotal in maintaining the vibrant appearance and functional integrity of your composite door. Here are Jack of Glass’ recommendations for the care of your composite door:

Clean your internal and external door facings, along with any glass, at least every four months following the cleaning advice found later in this guide.

Polish the handles and letter plate with a quality wax furniture polish after cleaning, applying the polish directly to the cloth and not the product.

By adhering to a routine cleaning schedule, you not only preserve the door’s aesthetic appeal but also prevent potential functional issues caused by the accumulation of dirt and grime.

Tackling Stubborn Stains

Occasionally, you may encounter stubborn stains that demand a bit more attention. In such instances, it’s imperative to use non-abrasive cleaning agents to ensure the door’s surface isn’t scratched or marred. For persistent or unusual stains, feel free to consult with Jack of Glass for professional advice on the best cleaning agents and methods to use.

Protective Measures

A composite door’s resilience to harsh weather conditions is notable, but taking additional protective measures ensures its longevity.

Annually inspect the rubber seal fitted to the outer frame for signs of tearing, cracking, or shrinking, and contact Jack of Glass if any anomalies are found.

Lubricate moving parts annually to ensure smooth operation.

These protective steps will keep your door functioning optimally and maintain its aesthetic allure over time.

DIY Maintenance and Professional Care

Balancing between DIY upkeep and professional maintenance is key to ensuring your composite door remains a steadfast and inviting entryway to your home.

Annually check the operation of the key mechanism with the door open. If excessive force is required to engage the lock mechanism, lubricate the key-way with a silicone-based spray lubricant like WD40.

Check for any gaps between the letter plate and the face of the door, tightening the screws behind the internal flap if necessary.

And of course, if you ever feel uncertain about any aspect of your composite door’s maintenance, contact the team at Jack of Glass who are always on hand to provide professional advice and services or download our online brochure.
Bi-fold doors have become increasingly popular among homeowners, and for good reason. These doors offer a plethora of benefits that can transform your living space in ways you might not have imagined. At Jack of Glass, we specialise in providing aluminium slimline bi-fold doors that are perfect for homes in High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Amersham, and other areas in Buckinghamshire.

Design Versatility

One of the standout features of our aluminium bi-fold doors is their design versatility. These doors are fully customisable, allowing you to create a panoramic door that not only suits your personal style but also complements the existing architecture of your home. The sleek profile and modern design make them an ideal choice for any contemporary home.

Space-Saving Benefits

Traditional doors swing inwards or outwards, taking up valuable space. Bi-fold doors, on the other hand, fold back onto themselves, saving you a considerable amount of room. This is particularly beneficial for smaller homes or areas where space is at a premium.

Enhanced Natural Light

Our selection of aluminium doors is designed with slim sightlines and expansive panels of glass that help to illuminate any space by letting natural light flood the room. This not only creates a more inviting atmosphere but also reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day, thereby saving on energy costs.

Ease of Operation

Bi-fold doors are incredibly easy to operate. With a simple push, you can open up an entire wall to the outside, or close it just as easily when you need to. The doors glide smoothly along their tracks, making it effortless to open and close them.

Indoor-Outdoor Flow

During the warmer months, you can fold back the doors to blend the interiors of your home with your garden, effectively expanding your living space. This creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas, perfect for social gatherings or simply enjoying a quiet moment in nature.

Security Aspects

When it comes to security, our aluminium bi-fold doors are second to none. The sturdy frame and toughened glass provide an excellent barrier against unwanted intruders. Aluminium is an inherently strong material, resistant to warping, cracking, and rotting, ensuring that your home remains safe and secure year after year.

Long-Term Investment

Investing in our bi-fold doors is a decision you won’t regret. The robust profile and modern design offer excellent thermal performance, keeping your home warmer for longer periods. This results in reduced energy consumption and lower energy bills. Moreover, the durability of aluminium ensures that your doors will stand the test of time, even during the harshest of winters and hottest of summers.

Here at Jack of Glass, we know that the pandemic has brought people a lot of time to reassess their living space and to make the decision to invest in their homes. If you’ve made the decision that a new front door is right for you – due to a draught, weather damage, or purely for aesthetic reasons – then let us explain the costs involved.

Cost factor one: the material

uPVC: This material is recognised as the most affordable when it comes to making a front door. Not only does this make it an attractive option, but your uPVC front door can be made in a wide variety of colours, including a wood-effect if you have a traditional property and want the appearance of timber but the reliability of uPVC. Your uPVC front door is also very easy to maintain, being wipe-clean, and can have an energy efficiency of up to A+.

Timber: If you do not want wood-effect, but the real thing, then timber may be the option for you. A timber door can add a sense of grandeur to your property. They also offer good energy efficiency and will be long-lasting, but all of this comes at a cost so be aware that it is the highest-priced front door due to the materials and specialist installation process.

Composite: At Jack of Glass, we most frequently find our High Wycombe customers choosing composite doors as their front door of choice. Our composite doors are made of a combination of a solid timber core with a GRP (glass reinforced plastic) skin. As such, they provide many benefits, like having the highest level of energy efficiency and they also offer you a high level of security due to their solid structure. The GRP skin can be tailored to the colour of your choice and is effective at withstanding accidental damage: all 3.8mm of the skin (one of the thickest on the market) is made in your desired colour, so a scratch or knock would not leave you with an unsightly mark.

Cost factor two: accessories and features

We can offer you many upgrades to enhance your door, be these for security purposes or for appearance. For example, you can tailor the colour of any of the above materials to suit your home. You might also consider upgrading to stainless steel ironmongery for your handles or letterplates. We also have a wide range of glass options, depending on how much light you wish your door to let into your property.

Cost factor three: the size

The cost of your door will of course be dependent on the size of the front door that you need. As you may expect, the bigger the size of the door correlates to the cost of the door and installation. This may also include such factors as sidescreens and flag windows. Every door is made-to-measure to ensure it is the perfect fit for your home.

Whichever door you choose, keep in mind the cost will also include the amount of time, skill and effort that the door will take to fit, and this is dependent upon the property type the door is being fitted into. For your peace of mind, each one of our doors comes with a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee as standard. Why not get a free quote today?
The post How much will a front door cost in 2022? appeared first on Double Glazing High Wycombe | uPVC Windows and Doors.

When it comes to replacing your front door, there are many factors to consider. Not only will you be enhancing the look of your property, but you also have the chance to improve the security, thermal efficiency and accessibility of your home.

Deciding on which front door to have installed isn’t always easy as there are lots of factors to consider. The first and potentially most important is which material your new door will be manufactured using. Our suppliers, Emplas use only the highest-quality materials to manufacture our uPVC and Composite Doors.

Composite doors offer a remarkably authentic-looking wooden finish and an impressively strong structure. This is achieved using a combination of different materials which are pressed and glued together under high-pressure conditions. The other popular choice for replacing your front door is to opt for a uPVC profile. In comparison to other materials like timber and aluminium, uPVC is generally lower in cost and offers some great benefits including easy maintenance, durability and versatility.

1. Considering Your Budget

We understand that all of our customers have a different budget when it comes to buying a new front door. With this in mind, we want to remind those looking for a new front door that choosing the cheapest option probably won’t be the best option. At Jack of Glass, we believe that upgrading your front door should be seen as an investment.

uPVC is usually the lowest cost option when compared to other door materials as it is much cheaper to manufacture. Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride, which is the full name of uPVC, is a type of plastic that’s tough and hasn’t had any additives inserted when manufactured. It’s the most popular choice of material for UK homeowners because of its low-price tag.

For customers that have a higher budget for their replacement door, composite doors are constructed using more sophisticated and costly materials. If you choose to make the extra investment in a composite front door, it could last for up to 35 years, compared to the maximum lifetime of 20 years for uPVC doors.

2. Which Style Suits Your Home

Letting your taste show in your style of front door can transform the entrance to your home. The functionality and design is important when choosing the right front door, uPVC doors are more limited due to being made from a singular material. Composite doors offer a much more versatile and flexible design with a whole host of colours, glazing options and finishes with an authentic timber look.

In terms of door furniture, there’s no difference – simply select the handle, letterbox and knocker which is best suited to your home and taste. You can also choose from a wide range of glass options for your new uPVC or Composite front door.

3. Securing Your Home

When you are choosing the right front door, security plays a very important part. By comparing Composite Doors and uPVC Doors security benefits, it is clear that they each offer unique features that make them secure.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that UPVC doors are not secure just because they are cheaper. Their galvanised steel core and multi-point locks combine to create an extremely strong front door. Although uPVC front doors easily meet modern security standards, Composite doors will offer customers an extra level of protection. Depending on the level of security you feel that your home will need, you may be more inclined to choose one of our composite doors.

4. Creating a Thermally Efficient Home

As well as weatherproofing your home against the harshest of elements, all uPVC entrance doors from Jack of Glass can provide high levels of insulation consistently. The enhanced insulation even allows for improved soundproofing, a particular benefit to those living alongside busy residential roads.

Our Composite doors are constructed to offer vastly enhanced door ratings because of the solid foam or compressed hardwood cores which have excellent thermal properties. The rebated frames installed during the manufacturing process and superior draught sealing all but eliminate draughts for your home.

5. Enjoy Maintenance and Longevity

When choosing your new front door, we understand that the level of maintenance required will play a big part in whether it will a suitable replacement. Homeowners often don’t want a door that will need to be re-painted or treated regularly. Opting for either a uPVC or Composite door will mean that minimum upkeep is necessary. Both of these materials are very resistant to the elements and require only a wipe with a damp cloth to keep them looking good as new.

As with every significant home improvement, choosing a new front door requires a lot of thought and consideration. The price will always play an important part in the final decision, but so should your personal preference.

While composite doors come at a higher price than uPVC, it’s worth bearing in mind the energy savings, reduced risk of burglary and customisation options might offset the price in the long-term. It’s also worth considering the effect higher quality front door may have on the price of your property should you decide to sell.

If one of our Composite front doors seems to be out of your budget, finance options are available with Jack of Glass, just get in touch for more information. Thankfully, no matter which material you choose, you won’t have to compromise on function over style – as both will transform and modernise the look of any home.

Climate change is a hot topic in the news with several London protests and school pupils around the UK demanding action. These protests have echoed the feeling of many people across the country: we need to do more. While the debate rages on in the Houses of Parliament, every homeowner can do their bit by considering renovating their home in an eco-friendly way.

Update to aluminium windows in your Buckinghamshire home

Aluminium is a natural material used for producing windows. It’s inherently robust, secure and almost completely recyclable. Aluminium windows offer a stylish and modern aesthetic to any home. The range of aluminium windows in Buckinghamshire from Jack of Glass can be fully customised, allowing you to select your ideal style and finishes with a massive range of colours to choose from.

On top of this, these frames are known for their energy efficiency, with their unique multi-chambered profile reducing heat loss by up to 60%. Combined with our double or triple glazed units, aluminium windows will lower your energy bills and could reduce your carbon footprint.

Use recycled or reclaimed materials

The unexpected and up-and-coming trend in the interior design community over the past few years is using recycled or reclaimed materials for home improvement projects. These materials provide a perfect blank canvas for budding DIY enthusiasts. Give reclaimed wood a chance and use it for flooring, countertops, drawers or household furniture.

Not a DIY aficionado? Some home improvement retailers offer products made from recycled materials such as plastic.

You can also do your bit by scouring second-hand furniture shops and giving the item a touch-up.

Switch the energy efficient products

Using less energy is good for your wallet and the environment. Over the past few years, companies have sought to make their products more energy efficient with the spotlight being on the eco-friendly revolution.

According to This is Money, swapping your C energy-rated fridge freezer for an A +++ rated equivalent could save you up to £113 a year. Perform an energy audit on the appliances in your kitchen and throughout the home, such as your fridge freezer, tumble dryer and washing machine, as replacing these white goods could save you money in the long run.

Opt for eco-friendly paint

Many paints have a high level of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). These carbon-based compounds can be harmful to health. Professional painters have a 20% increased risk of lung cancer according to the World Health Organisation. If that wasn’t bad enough, VOCs also contribute to global warming. Using paints with little to no levels of VOCs will benefit the environment and your health.

Aylesbury is only a short journey from our base in High Wycombe through the beautiful Chiltern Hills AONB and is an area we visit often to assist our customers with their latest home improvement project. But what county is the town of Aylesbury in?

Is Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire?

Yes, Aylesbury is in Buckinghamshire. Despite the county being named after Buckingham, Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire. The town assumed this title due to Buckingham being in the north of the county, a large inconvenience before the age of modern transport, and in 1889 the Buckinghamshire County Council was founded in the town. Today, Council Hall, a 15-story high-rise tower Grade II listed building in the centre of Aylesbury, serves as the meeting place and headquarters for the council.

Demographic of Aylesbury

The town has seen its population grow from roughly 28,000 in the 1960s to around 72,000 in 2011. This was primarily due to new housing estate developments that were built to ease pressure on London, which is only an hour away from Aylesbury by train.

Architecture of Aylesbury

In 1985, excavations in the town revealed evidence of an Iron Age hillfort thought to date back to 650 BC. The history of Aylesbury includes a visit from the Romans, with the town making up part of their great road network which was created to move troops and equipment from one base to another more efficiently.

The town still features buildings from the Georgian, Tudor and Jacobean eras as a reminder of its storied past. Dating back to 1455, the Kings Head is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. The building features an old cobbled courtyard, beautiful wooden beams and floors and is home to a pub run by The Chiltern Brewery. The King’s Head is also known for stories of 3 ghosts known to haunt the property, one referred to as The Grey Lady is believed to be a barmaid who fell to her death around the turn of the 20th century.

It’s that exciting time of the year again, where Christmas is just around the corner, but that also means that the weather outside has become substantially colder. For the unprepared, this comes with the risk of your home becoming unbearably cold. Luckily, there are a number of ways to avoid the heat loss associated with the winter chill, and we at Jack of Glass happen to be experts on the matter.

Rosewood uPVC casement window

Installing double-glazed windows to combat the cold

One of the biggest factors determining whether your house will feel the cold this winter is whether or not your windows have double glazing. Double glazing is when your windows utilise two panes of glass as opposed to just one. Argon gas is present between the two panes of glass which helps create a barrier against the cold. Heat normally travels through glass with ease, which is where a regular window fails. Argon gas traps this heat as it tries to leave, resulting in far less heat being lost overall and less money being spent on your heating bill.

Jack of Glass offers double glazing for both aluminium and uPVC windows, and there are multiple glazing options available. Things like textured glass options can be selected and we also stock almost any type of glass you can think of. Improved thermal efficiency isn’t the only benefit of double glazing, you’ll also have improved sound insulation, better security, and no condensation or draughts.

Insulation within the home

Another way to reduce the heat loss within your home this winter is to make sure your home is insulated. The previously mentioned double glazing is just one way of insulating your home, but you can also insulate your walls, roof, and floor. Insulation is the act of utilising a material that stops heat from escaping and cold from entering. To insulate your walls and reduce heat loss, you can install cavity wall insulation, which is a method that involves placing insulating material between the brick and the inside wall. The reduced air circulation results in minimised heat loss through your walls.

You can reduce the heat lost through your roof by insulating the ceiling of your loft. Many houses already have loft insulation but if yours doesn’t, you’ll definitely wish you’d done it sooner. It’s relatively easy to insulate your loft by yourself by using rolls of mineral wool insulation. Heat tends to rise upwards, so having something in place that stops it from leaving your home will make all the difference this winter.

Replacing your doors

You might not have known this, but your doors can actually be one of the biggest culprits in affecting the temperature of your home. If your door is particularly old or wasn’t fitted securely to begin with, you might be experiencing draughts within your home. A brand-new door from Jack of Glass is sure to minimise the heat loss within your home. Whether you’re looking for a uPVC, composite, bifold, French or patio door, Jack of Glass provides doors that are energy efficient and installed professionally to ensure that the least amount of heat is lost.

A damp house isn’t only repulsive looking, it can also represent a serious threat to your health. That’s why it’s incredibly important to get rid of damp and mould within your home, but to do this you’ll first need to find out what’s causing this to happen.

Why is a damp home dangerous?

Damp and mould can be hazardous to anyone but certain people, like children and the elderly, are more susceptible to it than others. Moulds produce substances that can cause an allergic reaction, as well as irritants and sometimes even toxic substances. Just the presence of these spores in the air can cause ailments like a skin rash or a runny nose. People with asthma may be particularly affected as moulds can cause asthma attacks.

What causes a damp home?

The main culprit of damp and mould appearing is excess moisture within a building. Moisture is the amount of water vapour that’s present within the air. The level of water vapour within your home can be affected by a multitude of simple everyday things, such as bathing or cooking. It may sound like it’s unavoidable to amass substantial levels of water vapour but there are a number of measures you can take to combat it, which in turn means you’ll minimise the risk of damp and mould appearing.

How to increase air circulation within your home

Air circulation within a home is important and it’s relatively simple to implement. One of the easiest things to do is just open your doors and windows to allow for air to travel in and out of the house without any obstacles. You might understandably be hesitant to do this though, especially in the winter as it can mean you’re wasting money by allowing heat to escape.

By opening windows and doors only when you’re doing specific tasks within your home, such as opening the windows in your kitchen when cooking or your bathroom windows when bathing, you can make an impact whilst not losing out on too much heat. You can always keep your internal doors open as it will have little-to-no impact on the temperature within your home but will allow the air to flow more freely.

Turning on a fan, be it a ceiling or desk fan, will massively help when it comes to ventilating your home. The increased power means that air is being pushed around your house more rapidly and is therefore entering and exiting the building at a faster rate.

Condensation causing moisture

Condensation on your windows can also contribute to excess moisture within your home. The previously mentioned techniques will help reduce the level of condensation within your home. A well-insulated home can reduce the frequency of condensation on your windows. In some cases, your windows may be more prone to condensation because they’re particularly old or were poorly installed.

If you think your windows are causing mould and damp to affect your home, it’s worth looking into replacing them with something more modern and less prone to condensation. At Jack of Glass, we offer windows that make use of things like high-quality double glazing and high-performance uPVC to ensure they’re thermally efficient with a reduced chance of condensation affecting you and your home.
